Skip hire vs. rubbish clearance — which suits your job?
Deciding between a skip and a clearance van in Surrey. A plain comparison of cost, convenience, and when each option makes sense.
The question comes up often: should I hire a skip or book a clearance team? Both get the rubbish gone. Which one makes sense depends on the job.
The main difference
A skip is a container you fill yourself, at your own pace. A clearance van comes with a team who do the lifting, loading, and driving for you.
That sounds simple — and mostly it is — but the practical differences matter.
When a skip works well
Skips suit jobs that run over several days or weeks. If you’re doing a loft conversion or a full renovation where waste appears gradually, having a skip on site that you can fill as you go is the natural choice.
Road placement needs a permit. If you need the skip on a public road rather than your driveway, the hire company must apply for a road skip licence from the local council. GOV.UK explains the requirement. It’s not complicated, but some councils take a few working days to process it, so plan ahead.
Restricted items. Most skips won’t take tyres, fridges, mattresses, or hazardous waste. Check the restrictions before you start loading.
When a clearance van works better
If the waste is already there — a garage full of old kit, the contents of a flat, a garden ready to clear — a clearance team is usually quicker and less hassle. You don’t do the lifting yourself, there’s no permit to arrange, and the job is done in a few hours rather than spread over a week.
You also get more flexibility on what goes in. A clearance team can tell you straight away whether a specific item is fine to include, rather than leaving you to read a skip hire terms sheet.
It suits one-off jobs well: a house clearance before a sale, an end-of-tenancy clear, a garage that’s been full since 2019.
A plain comparison
| Skip hire | Clearance van | |
|---|---|---|
| Labour | You load it | Team included |
| Timing | Fill over days or weeks | Done in hours |
| Road placement | Permit required | No permit needed |
| Restricted items | More restrictions | Fewer |
| Best for | Ongoing renovation waste | One-off clearances |
What we do
We’re a clearance team — so we’re the right call for jobs where the waste is ready to go. If you’re mid-renovation and need a container on site for months, a skip is probably your answer. If you’ve got a garage, a house, or a garden that needs emptying, give us a call.
